Henry Rhodes from the Northern Ballet Theatre came to teach two workshops on 25th November for the Junior and Senior school. He began each class with a technique class, which consisted of much more challenging and complicated steps than we would give in class, which gave the students something to aspire to as well as have a ‘good go’ at! There were lots of ‘oo’s, ahh’s and wow’s’ as Henry demonstrated the steps with absolute beauty and grace, leaving the children completely inspired, it showed on their faces! The seniors were taught small sections of repertoire during the class, for example a section from ‘Waltz of the flowers’ and a small part from the ‘Waltz of the Snowflakes’.
Whilst the children had a quick break he used picture cards to tell the summary of the story ‘The Nutcracker’ and explained that they would be focusing the second part of the workshop on the ‘Russian’ Dance. He split them into groups and taught a short routine using steps from the ballet and then handed over the reigns to the students to create their finale, using steps they had learnt throughout the workshop. To finish the children a group at a time performed their finished piece. It was an absolutely brilliant day, full of smiles, laughs and left the children excited to go watch the main production of the Nutcracker, which most have booked tickets for.
Special thanks go to Henry for delivering a wonderful workshop and inspiring our talented, budding ballerinas 🙂
